Racist conduct by open/self-acclaimed racists, as well as clandestine racists in American continue to take different forms with the primary goal of debasing the humanity of people of color while inflicting psychological, emotional, and physical pains on them. The pain of racism is exacerbated during public discuss by elite pundits who recommend to people of color to settle for a dishonest cliché that states that “racism in American is getting better”. For generations, this cliché was applied to any incremental regain of the denied humanity of people of color by their white counterpart as though people of color were created by white people who are incrementally allocating humanity to them such as the power to think, the legs to walk, the air to breath, and the right to pro-create. It is equally disgusting to see some uninformed members of the society buy into the cliché. It is sinful to state that the humanity of people of color, who are created in God’s image are giving a score of “getting better” by other creatures made by God. While lynching and public hanging of people of color is not visible in the public, it has been legally replaced by unwarranted execution of people of color in public without fanfare with guns under the disguise of “fear of one’s life” during normal interaction of “white human” and assumed “non-human black person”. Therefore, lynching through policy enactment and execution is very visible and continues to suppress the expression of the humanity and creativity of people of color. Consequently, the attainment of the equality of all humans before God in American society remain elusive and should not be scored as “getting better” or “not getting better”, but should be scored as “plain wrong” irrespective of any improvement.
In less extreme situations, made possible by public awareness, civil right pressures, and erratic government reforms, many racists have resorted to restricted and sometimes clandestine racist conducts such as mockery, racial slurs, bigotry, homophobia, and the undermining of the rights to life and happiness of people of color. Some racists in this group sometimes pretend in public to speak in favor of the rights and humanity of people of color for political, economic, and social reasons. Those who intend to seek political post or have already ascended into political post continues with outward public favor of black humanity, but privately holds firm to their biases, bigotry, and racism until they are exposed by accident. Those who market commercial commodities and sporting/social activities also seem to favor the humanity of people of color in public for economic and social fame, but continues their racist exploitation in various shapes and forms in the private.
Despite the awareness of various types of racist conducts meted to people of color and the potential racist conducts currently undermining their humanity, people of color are willing to forgive and trust repented racists who are genuine and honest. They also respect the honesty of racist individuals and groups who openly chose to continues to undermine their humanity as such openness provides them with the opportunity to engage such racist individuals or groups in ways that prevent unneeded casualty. Knowing the capacity of the hearts of people of color to forgive past racial intransigencies, it is surprising that those who have hidden racist conducts in their past, but who have genuinely and privately regretted their past conducts failed to take advantage of the forgiving magnanimity of people of color. It is not difficult for individuals or groups to atone for past racist conducts if it is born out of honest and genuine desire to wright past wrongs and never go back to the past racial conducts.
Racist Atonement Strategy
Successful atonement for racist conduct in the past depends on the extent and degree of the harm inflicted on people of color, the reasons for the abandoning of past racist conducts, and the intended gains of becoming a non-racist individual or group. It is easier to successfully atone for past racial conduct and be forgiven if there are no near future political, economic, and social gains, other than the desire to honestly wright past racial wrongs (no preconceived benefits). It is however, more difficult to successfully atone for racial conducts and obtain forgiveness when the individual or group are already enjoying political, economic, and social gains or intends to obtain such gains in the near future (preconceived benefits). In both cases, the strategy for atonement is the same, but the outcome might be different because the initial decision to come forward to apologize and atone for the racist conduct might have been forced by a second party discovery and exposure. Whatever category that apply, the below atonement steps must occur:
- Make irreversible decision to end and atone for racist conduct.
- Make the decision public in relevant forum that targets the individuals and population that was wronged by the racist conduct.
- Clearly state how and when the initial racial conduct participation started and all the harms that was inflicted to the people.
- Clearly state why the past conducts were wrong now and reasons for the change of heart.
- Make unrestricted heartfelt apology as many times as is needed.
- Ask for forgiveness as many times as is needed.
- Follow verbal apology with actionable conducts that display anti-racist activities.
