Sexually harassing women of all ages and races is not new and has been around from the beginning of time in a world dominated by men. Sometimes, emphasis seem to focus more on people with power and authority, but the issue pervades all human social strata. Most sexual harassment are never spoken about and may probably never make news in any form or shape. Sexual abuse or misconduct had always been an ongoing epidemic that is never addressed because societies have a way of hiding the issue under the cover of culture, religious norm, and the passage of wright. Even recent exposition of sexual harassment by people in authority that occurred many years ago gave credence to the fact that it was acceptably hidden under the cover of societal norm of men exhibiting natural masculine tendencies. Unfortunately, it was wrong then and wrong now. While attention is rightfully focused on people in power and authority, attention must not be lost on the majority of people in other social classes below the elite class, who also, exude low level latent influence that is equally detrimental to women’s sexual health. Supporting women who are currently speaking out against powerful men in authority is praise worthy, but it most go beyond one news cycle. Current status quo seems to show a spike and wane of sexual harassment accusation and then the society moves on and awaits future breaking news. This futile cycle is not only unacceptable, but provides little or no deterrence to future abuse-a default winning strategy for potential future perpetrators.
The entire humanity will be affected negatively if sexual harassment is not addressed. This is because the line between legitimate dating with good intention and sexual harassment might be blurred. This might negatively impact the coming together of two people with mutual love for purposes of partnership or procreation or both. Sometimes, parties previously open to dating advances might become apprehensive and apathetic towards any form of dating advances and might misconstrue and escalate harmless advances as sexual harassment. The risk is that people’s reputation might be collaterally damaged temporarily or permanently-a consequence that is burdensome and troubling to the fabric of any decent society. Naiveté among inexperienced individuals could easily go wrong in a climate where sexual harassment and misconduct is pervasive. It is important to note that all dating advances results in “yes” or “no” and ideally, the “no” result means that the two individuals do not share common feelings for each other and the search for mutual love continues by both parties without any accusation. In a society saturated with sexual misconduct, the “no” responses to legitimate dating advances could easily be perceived as unwanted sexual advances and public escalation might negatively impact the personal integrity of the person seeking legitimate love partner. The unfortunate outcome is that people retreat to their gender corners and an atmosphere of suspicion, skepticism, and fear of retribution might be created in a society where men and women must coexist.
